Have You Ever Wondered Why Your Child's Fever Gets Much Higher At Night?

Once again baby cakes has a cold with an accompanying fever. We've been going through the typical routine of temperature taking and series of questions I ask myself to make sure I'm taking care of her properly. You know the questions I'm talking about...the should list. Should I take her to school today, should I take her to the doctor, what should I feed her, etc.

Since my last experience with her catching a cold I found out that fevers go up at night. It's amazing to me that she's 41/2 and I just discovered that! Anyhoo, I was curious about what makes this happen and I found this interesting article by Dr. Greene, a renowned pediatrician. Here is what it reads.

"
our bodies are on a 24 hour clock called the Circadian Rhythm. Hormone levels rise and fall according to this daily cycle. Some hormones help us to wake up in the morning, others help us to sleep at night. These same hormones affect how we feel pain. During the day high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, keep us from feeling some of the pain and keep our fevers in check."

Click here to read Dr. Greene's full answer to the question "Why Does My Child Always Seem to Get Sick at Night"

A New Chapter

Yesterday I was told that there was no longer a need for my position at the company where I was working. As nicely as my former bosses tried to say it and as much as I can understand this business decision this doesn't change the fact that I am a woman with a family and bills to pay living check to check. So, what the heck do I do now? That was supposed to be my six month review. For the last few years, the average amount of time I've held a job has been about six months! That's right, count 'em up.

On a brighter note, now that I am a US Citizen I can go for a nice secure government job! Having the entrepreneurial spirit I have this will be a tough pill to swallow...well you know what they say "What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger." I will thoroughly enjoy some stability in my life for some time though I know that much. God willing, I still have plenty of time for my big dreams. I am not quitting just taking a breather so I can make it for the long haul...I am re-energizing.

With that said, in light of yet another change in my life, I am reconstructing Myakwamy. I hope you enjoy.

Women with Poor Sleep May Suffer Health Consequences

“This is the first empirical evidence that supports what we have observed about the role of gender and its effects upon sleep and health,” says Edward Suarez, an associate professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke and the lead author of the study. “The study suggests that poor sleep – measured by the total amount of sleep, the degree of awakening during the night, and most importantly, how long it takes to get to sleep – may have more serious health consequences for women than for men.” read more

last thursday, i was working on setting up a booth for our company's first major home show. the next day, i was doing some online banking and realized that my debit card had been used for charges that i did not make! after doing a little digging, i had enough evidence to deduce with about 90% certainty that one of my coworkers had stolen my card out of my wallet. i was furious! i immediately canceled my card and went to the police station to file a report. to make a long story short, i found out today with as much certainty as possible, that it was a coworker who stole the card.

How much time do women spend blogging and socializing online?

I am very curious about how moms spend their time and how they go through each day. I am the type of person who enjoys quiet time at home, so I guess because I find myself constantly going and going between family and work that sometimes I just wonder if there are much other people like me out there (duh, of course there are!). So, I asked my Work It! Mom (WIM) community how much time they spend blogging or socializing online. I spend probably about 2 hours a night on the average doing these things and sometimes I feel a little guilty about it because there are probably more things I can be doing around the house and such. Blogging and things do help me keep my sanity on a day to day basis though, so that feeling quickly goes away! Here are some responses from the WIM comunity. http://www.workitmom.com/question-2554

it is 10:53 pm i have set a bedtime for myself of about 11pm so i can be up by about 5:30 or 6 and have a decent amount of rest. i've joined a community of working and entrepreneur moms online called work it! mom. i'ts amazing how many of us lead such similar lives. i posted a question on the site asking how many hours of sleep do they get a night and they all said basically the same thing: about 6 average during weekdays and shoot for 8 on the weekends. wow! what is our society coming to? i am young, so can anyone tell me...was it always like this? don't get me wrong, i am very content with my life and am appreciative of everything i have...is there anything wrong though with a woman just wanting to have 1 or 2 hours a night to herself to do something therapeutic like blogging without having to cut into the 8 hours of sleep a night we need? i know there are several successful people in society who get less sleep than that on a regular basis. donald trump gets no more than 5 hours of sleep a night... i am not built that way though! i've tried on numerous occasions to get by on 5 hours a night, because there are other things in life i'd like to accomplish other than making the person i work for rich. i usually end up catching a cold or start falling asleep putting baby cakes to bed or something any way.

anyhoo, i am working on getting baby cakes into a language immersion program in the county for this fall as well as applying for early entrance for her since her birthday is 10/6. i think this is a tremendous opportunity for her, so please put it in prayer. i will visit her local school this friday to apply to 4 different area schools that have them for chinese, spanish, and french. awwwe my baby may start kindergarten this fall, sad and happy faces.

The Benefits of Keeping a Private Journal

A private diary is tremendously powerful. It can help you to greatly improve your business or website. If you want to be a success, you need to think and act strategically. At the very least, you should keep your goals in mind in order to work towards them daily.

And a private journal achieves all this more effectively than a static to-do list, which only lists end goals and results to be achieved.

Unlike a to-do list, a well kept journal provokes introspection. It is a liberating and productive outlet for random ideas, thoughts and feelings.

in my blogging endeavors i have decided to create a couple of new blogs!! one is not up and running yet and the other is http://mombloggersanonymous.blogspot.com for mommy blogger addicts, aka mba's. it's goal will be to serve as a resource for moms who blog. the challenge in this: having a successful blog takes a lot of knowledge, time, and dedication. the first 2 of 3 i am pretty low on at the moment and the last will not be a problem as long as i can decide where to put it. how can i dedicate myself to the things i want to accomplish without spreading myself to thin? i guess it's another one of those instances where i just need to keep moving forward because opportunities are multiplied as they are seized and everything will work out, yada yada and whatever other proverbs you can think of. until next time.

"Living with him terminally ill for two years because of the diabetes and cardiovascular complications, it scared the hell out of me," says Ms. Weaver, who just turned 48. "That kind of slapped me in the face."

She was determined to live well past the age when her father died: 48. So she made it her mission to educate herself about the illness. The Internet became a trove of the latest research, advances and medicines.

But her biggest source of help was a blog. Like many other Americans living with chronic conditions, she turned to faceless friends for support and information.

Mom Blog Network™ Releases Dynamic Widget and New Tools for The Mom Blogger Community

Providing the latest technology for bloggers to self-promote and reach more readers by making it easier to share content and grow viral audience.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 12, 2008 -- Mom Blog Network™ (www.momblognetwork.com) is proud to introduce the latest developments for its members: a dynamic, customizable widget and a multi-platform 3rd party blog integration tool. Both of these new features are designed to give mom bloggers additional opportunities to promote their posts across the web, reaching more readers and driving traffic.

The widget was created to be an important channel for extended network syndication as it dynamically pulls in the "hottest" headlines from MomBlogNetwork.com and displays them in a stylish sidebar module. "We thought it would be great to give all bloggers and other site owners the chance to conveniently offer their readers the latest headlines and links to a broad and diverse range of mom bloggers," says Andra Davidson, co-founder and president of MothersClick.com, the social network and parenting site which operates the network. "Our motto is: 'What moms are talking about' and, in the true spirit of community, the widget really helps our members distribute their content more widely."

Our motto is: 'What moms are talking about' and, in the true spirit of community, the widget really helps our members distribute their content more widely.
The integration tool was developed with the active blogger in mind. It provides the elegance of inline promotion through the simplicity of cut-and-paste, easily adding some code to any existing blog. This step is required only once and, thereafter, the system automatically creates a "voting" button which appears on every new post.

below was actually from yesterday mon. 2/25. my latptop died on me for no apparent reason. blogspot did save this for us though:

i have been in this country since 1984. i've always been american, but technically i was never american until today... i got my citizenship! i never thought i'd feel different, but i do and it feels good. i can vote in the country i've lived in for the last 24 years and i can even get a government job if i want! during my ceremony there was a letter from the president in an envelope which i read and found intriguing. in case you've never read a welcome letter into the country, here's what it reads:

Dear Fellow American,

I am pleased to congratulate you on becoming a United States citizen. You are now a part of a great and blessed Nation. I know your family and friends are proud of you on this special day.

Americans are united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals. The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding promise that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, and that no insignificant person was ever born. Our country has never been united by blood or birth or soil. We are bound by principles that moce us beyond our backgrounds, lift us above our interests, and teach us what it means to be citizens. Every citizen must uphold these principles. And every new citizen, by embracing these ideals, makes our country more, not less, American.

As you begin to participate fully in our democracy, remember that what you is as important as antyhing government does. I ask you to serve you new Nation of character. Americans are generous and strong and decent not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.

Welcome to the joy, responsibility, and freedom of American citizenship. God bless you, and God bless America.

Sincerely,

George W. Bush

Mesage from Kevin to Britney

Britney Spears Regains Visitation Rights With Kids

Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline has agreed to reinstate her visitation rights with their two sons, his lawyer said in a statement on Friday, according to The Associated Press.

Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said in a statement the former couple has agreed to a modification of a court order that had stripped Spears of her visitation rights, AP reported. The statement did not provide more details, but Kaplan told People.com on Friday that Spears would be allowed to see her sons "soon, very soon."

A court commissioner gave Federline sole physical and legal custody of their two sons and suspended the pop star's visitation rights on January 4.

Spears has not seen her sons Jayden James, 1, and Sean Preston, 2, since the first of her two hospitalizations in a psychiatric ward this year. She made two unsuccessful attempts to regain visitation rights in recent weeks.

today was a good day. baby cakes has asked me to continue "sneaking out" when i drop her off at school in the morning and that has been going really well (knock on wood). i am joining a local bni (business networking international) group, which i am very excited about. i encourage anyone who would like to grow their business to look into joining their local chapter. here is the link.

have you ever heard that donald trump gets no more than 5 hours of sleep a night? from what i've seen a large number of moguls get little sleep so it has always bothered me a little that i seem to require so much sleep! i tried yet again to go on a 5 hours of sleep a night streak... i don't think i'm built that way! this past saturday i was up until about 4:30 am blogging to wake up at 9 am. i did something similar the next night and now i have a bit of a cold. although it may not be related, i think it is. so, unfortunately, i think i am going have to limit my blogging to no more than 1 hour a night, maybe 2 on weekends.

baby cakes and i like going to cici's, which is an inexpensive pizza buffet place with a little game room inside. our new thing is when she earns 2 stars every day we go to cici's on thursday. so today we went and we had a ball as usual. we played air hockey and she did very well, getting 2 points.

anyhoo, that has been my fun and eventful week so far! hope you're doing great!

weekly buzz: must do family shows or events

medieval times is a must see event for families. this is not just a show for kids that we accompany them to. as we pulled up to arundel mills mall, baby cakes was excited to see a castle and asked if that's where we were going. we entered through the mall as the castle itself does not have an entrance. attendants were dressed in costumes and had cute medieval titles like server wench and castle maiden. they take pictures of you with a maiden you can purchase as well as offering several other souvenirs of course, some are complementary. the presentation was very good, food was good, and service was very good. overall, i'd have to say that this unique show was great! baby cakes (the little girl) loved it and big boy (the significant other) enjoyed it as well. here's a link, check if there's one in your area. if you have a weekly buzz topic you'd like to see, please share.

Shaping Youth: Nickelodeon's diversity programming

It seems China is finally getting some much-needed positive media coverage, with the official 2008 Beijing Olympics site up, more people using Skype media to learn Chinese with authentic accent integration, and now, some preschool positives to bring Mandarin into the home.

Nickelodeon’s diversity programming is enriched with the debut of the “play along, think-along” cartoon Ni Hao, Kai-Lan,” now slated for the first day of the Chinese New Year. (now airing February 7th, with a ‘sneak peek’ next week on Nickjr.com and iTunes, Jan. 28)

Shaping Youth Correspondent Ashley who blogs at Children’s Media Consultant reported this awhile back, noting that it represents Nickelodeon’s first foray into Eastern culture, focusing on social and emotional lessons, multicultural values, cause-and-effect thinking, and basic Mandarin language skills for 2- to 5-year-olds. i almost forgot to tell you! every morning when i drop off baby cakes to her daycare/preschool i say "see you later, love you" and give her a big hug & kiss. she responds by following me to the door and giving me a light hug, saying "no" in the ever so gentle tone that she... usually has. so mornings when i'm running a little behind, which is just about every morning, i remind her that we have to be mindful of the time when we say are goodbyes. so...on tuesday morning i told her this and she says "well, i think you have to sneak out. be quiet so i don't hear you then when i'm not looking go real fast." lol. i don't believe in sneaking out when dropping off young children so i was never in the practice of doing that. every morning since then she reminds me to sneak out and i let her know that i will sneak out and she has been doing great with that (knock on wood) although it breaks my heart to not give her a hug and kiss before we part.

it is 3:13 am EST time, fri feb. 8 or 9, i'm not sure right now and don't feel like looking for what date it is. anyway i have been waiting for an hour for the pediatrician on call to call me back. actually it is 3:17 am now and i just called the answering service again who said the doctor on call should call back within about 15 min. and if not to call again. she told me that in the future if i don't hear back within about 15 min. to call them right back. so now it is 3:24 and i just got off the phone with the pediatrician. the answering service lady did also mention she thought the page didn't go through correctly which makes me feel much better that they don't have concerned mothers waiting up at all hours of the night. the pediatrician actually did call right back.
... so here's the story...since tuesday i have been taking care of my sick 4 year old. her temperature had been progressively going down since i got the call from school with her having an under arm temperature of 101. i decided to go to work yesterday (thursday) afternoon because she seemed to be doing great to me with just that lingering fever that was going down. my mom's friend agreed to watch her for me so i could go to work for the afternoon. i went in at 11:30 and left at 5:30 by the time i was getting my daughter ready for bed at 8:30 pm she didn't look very good to me and her temperature was at 99 under the arm. 2 am she wakes up to use the bathroom and she felt like she was burning up: temp of 101.8 under the arm. i'm feeling a little guilty for going to work now. i feel like i needed to have encouraged her to rest and drink fluids more and not be in a rush to get back to work. i guess there's always more we can do... as long as we try to do our best on a day to day basis and everyone is alive and happy at the end of the day, what more can one ask for?
